Hailey Bieber is expanding the family. Yes, she just welcomed baby boy Jack in August, but we’re talking about the Rhode family. True to Rhode’s MO, the winter-ready formula is one of her own personal skincare essentials—she and her team have been working on its creation for the last year and a half. “I have always loved a rich, balmy product as a sealant for other products on the skin in the colder months,” she says.
“It’s also great used underneath your makeup when you need a little extra hydration. You can use it on the face, neck, chest, and hands, and it’s great for plumping and hydrating the skin, addressing fine lines, and all of that.” She also likes to dab the Barrier Butter on top of her make-up, to add a healthy sheen.
The original super is similarly thrilled to be a part of the campaign—not least because her daughters were over the moon to hear about it. “I can’t tell you how excited my daughters were,” she says. “And even more so when all the goodies [including plenty of the cult lip phone cases] arrived. I feel very honored Hailey has chosen me to be part of one of her countless successes, I’m one of her fans, I’ve been to Erewhon in Los Angeles and had multiple Hailey Bieber smoothies!”
Acknowledging Bieber’s knack for being ahead of the zeitgeist, I remark that it’s rare for a skincare brand to have such significant cross-generational appeal. Schiffer agrees: “I know from my experience that most skincare companies find it a challenge trying to figure out how to reach wider audiences—it’s very hard to combine young and older skin types, which is why Rhode is so special.” Schiffer, for one, likes to keep her skincare routine “simple and straightforward”, but also utilizing the “best of the best”, because—like many of us—she tends to be short on time in the mornings.
Claudia loves the new Barrier Butter because she has “a lot of days where my skin is much drier and the luxury buttery feel is perfect for intensive moisture,” she says. “When my skin has been covered in makeup on photoshoots, and the hydration has been sucked out of it, it’s like an intense hydration bomb overnight.” She is also a huge fan of the Peptide Glazing Fluid, which she credits with creating a dewy, glowy, and healthy complexion.
Any other skincare tips? She has a few. “One of the most important things is to always wash your hands with soap before you do anything because you don’t want to rub in any bacteria or dirt— that’s really important,” she says. “I also always make sure I use super clean face clothes and towels. I use the cloth, then put it in my laundry basket, and have a new one [next time]. And the other one my mother taught me was to start early [with your skincare routine].”
Schiffer is also a big advocate of a healthy lifestyle for beautiful skin, and follows a low-carbohydrate, -sugar, and -dairy diet. She also drinks minimal alcohol. “I try to drink three to four liters of water every day. It’s hard and I have to concentrate on it, but I bought myself a large Owala cup and fill it up in the morning with water. I tell myself I’m not going to bed until I’ve had at least three of them,” she says.
As for Hailey, how does the new formula sit in her skincare routine? “My philosophy with skincare has always been about minimalism,” she says. “I think that still rings very true, I probably take more time in the evenings when I have a little bit more time to myself, but I think even if you’re just doing a little hydration and SPF [at this point], you’re still doing a lot. Even if you get up and brush your teeth that day, you’re still doing a lot!”
