The Cult Looks of Wes Anderson’s Heroines

GEORGE V MAGAZINE
In real life, the color-saturated perfection of Wes Anderson ‘s exquisitely symmetrical world has helped define true fashion cliques. Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2015-2016 collection featured blood-red pussy-bow blouses, textured belted coats, and beige slips, in a detached style clearly belonging to Margot Tenenbaum (created by costume designer Karen Patch).

On the occasion of the exhibition currently being dedicated to her by the Cinema George V Magazine pays tribute to its favorite actresses with their unforgettable chic. “I feel like my characters could go from one of my films to another and they would naturally fit in,” Wes Anderson told George V Magazine in 2023.

Imagine Margot Tenenbaum (Gwyneth Paltrow), permanently carrying a Hermès Birkin bag , lounging next to ‘Jack’s girlfriend’ (Natalie Portman), in a yellow bathrobe in Hotel Chevalier (the prequel to the 2007 film The Darjeeling Limited). Or Tilda Swinton , wrapped in her cape as a social worker in Moonrise Kingdom (2012), chatting with Eleanor Zissou , played by Anjelica Huston in The Life Aquatic (2004).

Elsewhere, the distinctive Chelsea collar of Suzy Bishop’s pink dress in Moonrise Kingdom – created by costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone – could have come straight out of summer 2020’s cottagecore trend. While Owen and Luke Wilson ‘s bowling shirts in
Bottle Rocket (1996) signaled a predilection for Prada silhouettes, with whom the director went on to collaborate, curating an exhibition at the Prada Foundation in Milan (and directing the Prada Candy campaign ).

Wes Anderson‘s Bar Luce —a café he designed in 2015 using “the exact opposite approach to what I usually do for my film sets”—has also fulfilled his childhood ambition: to become an architect. Thanks to his films, Anderson has made his name something of a byword for “impeccable style.” The color-drenched, large-scale interiors are “so Wes Anderson.” Chocolate Courtesan pastries, bubblegum pink bathroom tiles, oversized tinted glasses, and, of course, the famous little red barrette, all symbolize his playful yet bourgeois aesthetic.
