The perfume
Even if they’re made from natural ingredients, fragrances can cause allergic reactions. “If you have sensitive skin, opt for fragrance- and odor-free products,” dermatologist Blair Murphy-Rose tells Byrdie.
Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol is often used in skincare products for its ability to dry quickly and provide a cooling sensation. However, it strips the skin of its natural oils that are needed to keep it hydrated. “This can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier, leading to dryness and irritation. Consider using hydrating toners with ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid instead,” advises dermatologist Divya Shokeen.
Sulfates
Sulfates, commonly used as foaming agents in facial cleansers, shampoos, and body washes, are effective at removing impurities. Unfortunately, they can also strip skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and irritated. Too harsh for sensitive skin, experts recommend looking for cleansers with gentler surfactants.
The Conservatives
Essential for extending the life of skincare products, some preservatives can cause allergic reactions, especially in people with sensitive skin. Components such as parabens should therefore be avoided or tested first on a small area of the skin before applying to the entire face.
AHA and BHA acids
However, their potency can make them too harsh for sensitive skin. Experts recommend opting for enzymatic exfoliants or gentler formulas.
If in doubt, do not hesitate to seek advice from a dermatologist.
