It is now seriously winter and for many of us that (also) means the season of crackling hair that is impossible to navigate. High time to get rid of those static moons once and for all. Neubauer Artists asked top hairdresser Bert Visser for advice. “In any case, use a nylon or wooden brush.”

Static hair: this is the cause and how to get rid of it

“In any case, it has to do with the times we are in now. The cold in combination with certain fabrics of our clothing in contact with hair creates static electricity. And that has to do with the humidity, which is higher at this time of the year, for example look at the fog in the early morning. That humidity creates a kind of water layer on your hair, which remains on it and causes an electrical reaction,” Visser explains.

What to do about those unwanted electrical conditions on your head? Visser advises in any case to avoid a plastic or metal comb or brush. These materials conduct electricity, which makes a static reaction more activated. A brush made of wood or nylon is better. “What I always recommend is to spray some hairspray or varnish into your brush – after all, not everyone appreciates a total wet look, so it doesn’t bother you at all – and brush it through your hair. I always use the Foundation Mist from Oribe, a kind of primer that ensures that electricity is removed from the hair, so that the hair becomes calm and does not get that static effect. This product contains centrimonium chloride, which has antistatic properties. So make sure you use a product with that ingredient.”

‘The healthier, the more static’

Any hair can be static, but some suffer from it more than others. “People with dry hair often suffer less from this because dry hair absorbs moisture from the air more quickly. With healthier hair, moisture remains on the hair, which gives you an electrical response faster. The healthier the hair, the more static. You often see it in young children or people who do not color or style their hair; it is then much more static.

In any case, it is important to take good care of your hair with a shampoo and conditioner. Brushing with a spray or primer creates a layer on the hair that protects it against electrical reactions. Such a product makes the hair calmer and you can do it several times a day.”
