New details have emerged about the couple who were found dead at a Spanish holiday home yesterday.
The Irish Mirror reports that the woman is from a well-respected family in Co. Monaghan, and she had been living and working in England for over a decade. She and her husband were discovered deceased in a jacuzzi in the villa they were renting with their children in Cullera, a town south of Valencia city, on Tuesday. Her husband is understood to be from Australasia.
Three relatives of the Irish woman are understood to have left Monaghan on Tuesday night and have now arrived in Valencia in the early hours of the morning. They are now looking after the couple’s children.
“She and her family are very well-known in the Monaghan area,” one source told the Irish Mirror. “News is just filtering through back home about what has happened. People are very shocked.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to the Irish Mirror it was aware of the incident and was providing consular assistance in the case of one Irish citizen.
Initial reports said both the woman and her husband were Irish.
A spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror: “The Department is aware of this case and is providing consular assistance in the case of the Irish citizen concerned.
“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”
The couple’s two young children reportedly alerted the homeowner after finding their naked bodies at their rented villa near Valencia at around 5pm local time on Tuesday.
The local homicide squad are leading the probe after the first officers on the scene found “possible evidence” a crime had taken place. Local reports say the pair, aged 50 and 45, had injuries consistent with “puncture wounds”.
However, the possibility that they suffered an accident while they were in the hot tub has not yet been ruled out. The grim discovery was made yesterday afternoon on an upmarket residential estate called Cap Blanc in Cullera.
The town, around 25 miles south of Valencia, is home to around 25,000 people. Local police employed by Cullera Town Hall were dispatched to the scene along with the Civil Guard, which is now leading the investigation.
It was not immediately clear this morning how long the couple found dead had been living in the area. Cap Blanc is a popular golden-sand beach and residential neighbourhood in Cullera, situated near the resort’s lighthouse.
The gated community’s villas and apartments have views of the Mediterranean Sea. Cap Blanc beach is a 630-metre long semi-urban beach.
