Jessica Moretti, at the center of the Crans-Montana fire case, requested daily compensation from her insurers on October 6, according to the Italian press. This request has enraged the victims’ families.
The New Year’s Eve fire in Crans-Montana was a tragedy followed with sorrow by many. Jessica Moretti, co-owner of the bar Le Constellation, is one of those charged in the case that caused 41 deaths and 115 injuries . Despite all the controversy surrounding the woman who runs the bar with her husband, it seems she has found another avenue for legal action. Indeed, on Tuesday, October 6th, the Italian news agency ANSA revealed that she had filed a claim for compensation !
According to the media outlet, Jessica Moretti has filed a claim with her accident insurance company for daily compensation. The reason given is “loss of income due to health problems” following the serious fire that occurred on the night of January 1st. This request is surprising coming from someone whose husband, Jacques Moretti, has been in pretrial detention since mid-August for ” domestic violence .”

So far, Jessica Moretti‘s claim has not yet received a positive response from her insurer, Zurich Insurance. Nevertheless, this claim has been particularly shocking, especially for the victims’ families. Interviewed by Libération, they expressed their outrage at the initiative of the co-owner of Le Constellation. Vinciane Stucky, mother of one of the victims, stated that it was a “provocation against the families.” Calling the claim ” pathetic ” and ” lamentable,” she lamented being “left to fend for herself, having to pay for a lawyer by taking out loans .”
For her part, Trystan’s mother, the 17-year-old victim, reacted angrily: ” How dare Jessica Moretti ask that, when she herself is responsible for this deteriorating health? She knew very well that her bar wasn’t up to code . The guilty parties [Jessica Moretti is still presumed innocent, editor’s note] will soon receive more help than the victims.”

Speaking to our colleagues at Libération, the lawyer for one of the victims expressed his shock: “This isn’t the first audacious move the Morettis have made. They’ve always behaved like this, trying everything .” Jean-Claude Guidicelli, the lawyer for the two bar employees who died in the fire, admitted he was speechless in the face of this demand. “How can someone charged with such serious offenses be compensated? This is madness,” he explained.

To date, no decision has been made regarding Jessica Moretti ‘s request for compensation for the personal consequences of the tragedy. According to Le Matin, Zurich Insurance is still reviewing the request, but the Valais cantonal prosecutor’s office has reportedly already given its approval should the payments be made.
