The 8 well-being precepts of our cover star for a calm mind and a body in tuning fork.
The secrets of her perfect skin, the keys to the balance between her life as a model and a mom, her relationship to nature for a mental health at the top and a body aligned Doutzen Kroes, cover star of the February issue of Vogue France, gives us his best tips to shine, in & out.
The 8 Beauty Secrets of Doutzen Kroes

1. A sharp protocol. The secret of Doutzen’s ineffable glow? Injections of polynucleotides, fragments of highly purified salmon DNA, that everyone is talking about at the moment. The ideal care to unify the complexion, revive the microcirculation and restore the skin elasticity, without changing the architecture of the face. “When I started modeling, everyone told me I had beautiful skin, I took this for granted. Since I was 40, I have been doing more facials and I have been laser with PDRN, I see real effects. I like the idea of getting older harmoniously. I’ve always been very inspired by 60-year-old women who are beautiful in the natural way,” says the top.
2. Practicing gratitude. Harvard University certifies it: gratitude is strongly and systematically associated with greater happiness. It helps to feel positive emotions, to enjoy the good experiences but also to improve health and to cope with adversity. For Doutzen, it is also a beauty secret. “I try to be an optimistic person, to feel gratitude for all I have. It’s cliché, but the beauty really comes from within. It’s something people feel, not just that they see.”
3. Hydrating to block. The top practices the layering technique: apply a succession of moisturizing formulas in strategic order to seal the assets. First, the Ayuna nectar for the lips and eyes (the thinnest areas of the face, so those that age the fastest) followed by a good dose of oil (Harmony Castor Oil). She then applies a rich cream (Dag&nacht Crème de Vitaly Balance) in sharp movements, not to mention the neck and bust. “My routine is simple but effective. I get in small local supermarkets in Holland. I have very dry skin, especially in winter. I apply my treatments by massage, ending with the earlobes, I was told that it was a great technique to release tension.” She is also a big follower of French pharmacies, and does not fail to redo her stock of Prodigious Oil of Nuxe, when she is on holiday in the South of France.
4. “Less is more.” On a daily basis, Doutzen lets his skin breathe, zero makeup, if not a touch of anti-circle in case of appointment, a hint of mascara and a little blush or sunbathing for the good-looking effect. His best advice comes from Pat Mcgrath in backstage: apply his foundation by loose movements all over the face, as one would apply a cream. “When I first saw his technique, I was in disbelief! I remain true to his method since, the material penetrates really better and the rendering is much more natural. I like makeup that doesn’t seem to be.”
5. Finding the balance. When it comes to food, Doutzen advocates healthy and conscious food, without ever being in the deprivation. A question of balance and common sense. “I’ve done some testing and I know what my body tolerates. I found out I was allergic to gluten, I have to be more careful.” When she is at home, Doutzen cooks, bets on fresh, local and seasonal products, and swaps bad fats for coconut or olive oil. His cute sin? The French fries, especially those of the Château Voltaire in Paris, where she descends when she is passing through the capital.
6. Disconnect. Two years ago, Doutzen was actively posting on Instagram for his 8 million followers and regularly powering his YouTube channel. But since then, radio silence. “It became toxic to me. I felt like I had to have an opinion on everything. Networks have taken up way too much space in my daily life, in my brain. I scrolled for hours without even being aware of it. I feel like I have more mental space. I reinstalled the app because my son signed up, I prefer to be aware of what is happening… Who knows, one day I may be back!”
7. Reconnect with nature. Far from the tumult of his life as a model, it is in his garden that Doutzen folds when everything goes too fast. “When I need space, I sit in my chicken coop, in the middle of chickens. I refocus in my vegetable garden, among my vegetables. Nature heals everything. As a human being, contemplating it makes some deep in me vibrate, it makes me more humble. It allows me to remain anchored, to de-stress thoroughly.”
8. Playing sports in conscience. She tried everything: from hard yoga to kickboxing, running… “I was very hard and pushy with my body. Today I allow myself to be more tender with myself. I do less workout, but more yin yoga, gentle practices. I also do a lot of massages, I feel like I have to free myself from a lot of things after living such a stressful life. The most important thing is to listen to your body.”
