Donald Trump is pushing a $152 million plan to transform historic Alcatraz into a state-of-the-art prison for the US’s most dangerous criminals.
The relevant provision is included in the budget for the fiscal year 2027 and concerns the coverage of the first restoration and reconstruction works, with the ultimate goal of creating a “state-of-the-art security prison”. It is recalled that Alcatraz, which closed in 1969 and is now under the National Park Service, had ceased to operate mainly due to the high cost of maintenance.
Trump’s proposal and the new use plan
Last May, the US president announced via social media that he was ordering the Bureau of Prisons , the US Department of Justice and other relevant agencies to proceed with the reopening of a significantly larger and fully renovated Alcatraz, stating that it would house “America’s most ruthless and violent offenders . “
The historic penitentiary, which had been in operation since 1934 , had gained a reputation as the most secure prison in the United States, thanks to both its geographical isolation and the dangerous sea conditions surrounding it.
The past of Alcatraz
Alcatraz’s facilities have previously held notorious crime figures, such as Al Capone , which reinforced its reputation as a maximum security prison.
However, its operation was eventually suspended due to the extremely high costs, which were estimated to be almost three times higher than other federal prisons.
