Throughout the whole trial, the simple task of deciding what to wear became a minefield. I knew I couldn’t look sexy because then the jury might think I’d been asking for it. I couldn’t look too powerful because then I wouldn’t look like a victim. I couldn’t look unattractive either, though, because then I wouldn’t seem believable. The court case was brutal. I could only watch as the most intimate details of my life were poured over by strangers – and to be told by the defence that, somehow, this was all my fault. I was left feeling humiliated and disempowered. Ultimately, though, as difficult as it was, I was believed, and he was found guilty. So, when the time came to watch him be jailed, I used my wardrobe to start reclaiming my identity.

From poverty period to the resurgence of diet culture, it’s never been tougher to be a girl. Young people in the European Union are experiencing a happiness recession — and teenage girls are facing the brunt of it. This was reported last week in the Children’s Society’s Good Childhood Report 2024, with 15-year-old girls faring the worst, but it has been the case since at least 2013/14 when the Children’s Society first reported a gap in life satisfaction between girls and boys.
