A voice announced “Gianni, this is for you,” as a curtain was drawn back to reveal the supermodels. A historic show. With Milan Fashion Week in full swing, Donatella Versace, determined to pay tribute to her brother, Gianni, on the twentieth anniversary of his death, staged a spectacular show that fashionistas will remember for a long time. The reunion show was in tribute to her late brother Gianni – the models all worked with him in the years prior to his death – and the show served as a tribute to the superstar fashion designer on the 20th anniversary of his death.
After a show that featured gold and bold prints, the finale was a curtain-raiser, set to George Michael’s “Freedom! 90,” to reveal five of the biggest models of the 1990s. The women wore stunning gold gowns and walked the runway hand in hand.
Gianni Versace, the founder of the luxurious Italian fashion house, died, murdered nearly 20 years ago after being short dead in his Miami Beach mansion in 1997. The designer fell at the age of 50, on the steps of his sumptuous Miami Beach home, killed by the deadly bullets of an American serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Between April and May 1997, the 27-year-old assassin savagely killed four men, including two of his ex-lovers. The morning Gianni Versace lost his life, Andrew Cunanan was waiting for him.
Gianni Versace, who founded the fashion house in 1978 and is widely credited with cementing the concept of a supermodel. After her brother’s sudden death, Donatella took over his duties at the fashion empire. A week later, he killed himself in turn with a bullet to the mouth. A tragedy that has forever marked the history of fashion. During the Versace show in Milan, just as the curtain was rising on the models, when a disembodied announced soberly: “Gianni, this is for you” all the models did a catwalk together in an unforgettable tribute.
