Details about the third season are largely unknown, although we do know that most of the main characters will return, including Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Alexa Demie, Sydney Sweeney, Maude Apatow, and Storm Reid.
When Will Season 3 Air?
With production on the third season set to begin in January 2025, HBO has confirmed that Euphoria will officially air on our screens in 2026.
On February 10, HBO released the first look at Zendaya as Rua in season three. The first shot shows Zendaya from behind, with her head turned slightly towards the camera. In a statement released on July 12, 2024, HBO’s executive vice president of programming, Francesca Orsi, said, “I’m so excited to be ready to begin production on Euphoria in January. We couldn’t be happier about our creative collaboration with Sam and this incredible cast. We look forward to bringing this new season of Euphoria to life for our fans.”
There are several factors that caused significant delays in filming. In 2023, a writers’ strike halted production in the industry, and creator Sam Levinson was focused on his and The Weeknd’s drama series The Idol (which was canceled after one season).
Meanwhile, many of the show’s stars—like Zendaya, Sweeney, and Elordi—were busy with major projects, which could have made it difficult to coordinate filming. Also, Levinson insists on writing the entire series himself, which is likely slowing down the process.
Which Cast Members Will Be Returning For Season 3?
With the production start date announcement, HBO also confirmed the return of the entire main cast, including Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi, who will all reprise their roles in the upcoming season. Barbie Ferreira, who played Kat in the series, however, announced on Instagram that she will not be returning to her role.
“After four years of playing the most special and enigmatic character, I have to say goodbye to her with many tears,” Ferreira wrote, according to Variety . “I hope that many of you could recognize yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy in watching her journey to the character she is today. I put all my care and love into it and I hope you could feel it. I love you, Katerin Hernandez.”
It’s unclear whether we’ll see Cal Jacobs (Eric Dane) again, as he was reported to the police by his son in the season 2 finale. Ashtray (Javon Walton) may only return in flashbacks or dream sequences, given that his character was killed in a shootout with police in the final episode of season 2. Given the tragic death of Angus Cloud in July 2023, his character, Fezco, will also not be present in the series.
Will The Characters Still Be In High School?
Many of our questions about East Highland High School were left unanswered (When do these kids go to class? What’s the drama club’s budget?), but season three will at least take the characters toward graduation. Zendaya hinted in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that season three could explore the characters’ lives beyond high school, either as high school seniors looking to the future or as young adults who have graduated.
“I think it’s going to be exciting to explore characters beyond high school,” she said. “I want to see what Rue looks like on her journey to sobriety, how chaotic that might seem. But also with all the characters, in that sense, where they’re trying to figure out what to do with their lives once high school is over and what kind of people they want to become.”
