It’s been six years since the film with the most quoted quotes of the 21st century formed the basis for a Broadway musical. And now, as a logical course of events seems, the musical is coming back to the big screen. Of course, we are talking about the new Mean Girls movie.

Trailer ‘Mean Girls’

The trailer for the film, which is simply called Mean Girls, appeared earlier, on November 8, 2023. And we can say that there is a lot to process. The return of Tina Fey as the drug addict Miss Norbury and Tim Meadows as the irritated director Duvall. A recreation of the Jingle Bell Rock scene. Reneé Rapp as a provocatively dressed Regina George. A glimpse of Cady’s Halloween costume from the zombie-ex-woman. Jon Hamm taking on the role of obsessed Coach Carr. Emily in Ashley Park in Paris as a French teacher. Oh, and sorry, but Busy Philipps takes over the baton from Amy Poehler as the original Cool Mom, Mrs. George. Have you also been sold before you saw the trailer?

Cast

During the revival, Angourie Rice wears a checkered shirt and a ponytail for her role as the former homeschooled Cady Heron, whose parents have returned to the US as a zoologist after a decade in Africa. Moana’s Auli’i Cravalho will be seen as the artistic Janis. And Tony and Grammy-nominated star Jaquel Spivey (known from A Strange Loop) plays the brutal Damian. Bebe Wood is the increasingly desperate Gretchen, Avantika Vandanapu our beloved empty head Karen, Christopher Briney of The Summer I Turned Pretty the dreamy Aaron Samuels and Mahi Alam can be seen as rapper Kevin G.

Meanwhile, behind the camera are co-directors Arturo Perez Jr and Samantha Jayne, along with Tina Fey, who wrote both the original film and the musical. This time she was the screenwriter and producer, which means we are in safe hands.

Release date

The film Mean Girls will be shown in theaters from January 12. As a millennial, I do have one complaint for the creators: I accept (reluctantly) that almost twenty years have passed since the first Mean Girls came out, but that the trailer starts with the sentence: ‘These are not your mother’s mean girls‘? Offensive.
