The director is known for his large-scale and innovative works, and this time his new
film “The Odyssey” is attracting attention even before the shooting begins.
“The Odyssey” has been brought to the big screen a few times before, first with a 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, and later with 1954’s “Ulysses” starring Kirk Douglas. The 2000 satirical comedy film “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” is also loosely based on Homer’s magnum opus, and 2024’s “The Return” with Ralph Fiennes is adapted from the last sections of the epic poem.
Holland admitted last week to signing on to the project without knowing many details. “To be perfectly honest, I don’t really know what it’s about,” Holland recently said on “The Dish” podcast. “I’m super excited, but it’s been pretty quiet about the project. I met with [Nolan] and it was awesome. He kind of loosely pitched what it is, and I’m sure when he’s ready he’ll announce what it’s about”
Universal Pictures has announced that it will be a mythical action film shot using the latest IMAX technology. The film is expected to be released on July 17, 2026, offering viewers a unique visual experience, Variety reports.
The Odyssey tells the story of the ancient Greek hero Odysseus as he overcomes numerous obstacles on his journey home after the Trojan War. Homer’s ancient Greek epic remains one of the most influential works of literature, and its adaptation for IMAX promises to take the epic to a new level. This will be the first time that The Odyssey has been presented on such a large scale using cutting-edge filmmaking technology.
The star-studded cast reflects the project’s lofty ambitions, with Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron all starring in the title roles. This combination of talent promises an emotional and dynamic development of the characters within the epic story.
The director and his team plan to begin filming in 2025, immediately after the completion of the triumphant project “Oppenheimer”. Nolan, together with producer Emma Thomas, is working on the script and ensuring its implementation under the flag of his own company Syncopy.
The story of the Odyssey has been brought to the big screen many times before, but none of the previous adaptations have taken such a technological approach. From classic films of the early 20th century to modern comedic interpretations, Homer’s poem remains a source of inspiration for artists around the world.
Tom Holland, who plays one of the key roles, admitted that he himself knows little about the project yet. In the podcast The Dish, the actor shared that meeting Nolan made a big impression on him, and although the details remain a mystery, he is looking forward to starting work on the film.
