We usually notice the first colder days on the skin, but the lips are often the first to “pay the price” of the weather change. Wind and colder temperatures can lead to tightness, flaking and an uncomfortable feeling of dryness. The good news is that a few simple habits can be enough to keep lips soft and nourished all fall long.

A lip balm that really pleases

Lip balm is not only the final step of the beauty routine, but a small daily protection against cold, wind and dry air. When choosing a product for autumn, give preference to  simple, nourishing formulas that create a protective layer on the surface of the lips . Petrolatum, petroleum jelly, shea butter, ceramides, squalane, and plant oils like jojoba can help reduce moisture loss and keep skin softer. If lips are already very dry, thick balms and ointments are usually a better choice than light, fast-absorbing formulas, as they provide longer-lasting protection. For daily care, especially while outside, it is good to choose a balm with  SPF 30 or more .

On the other hand, it is worth being careful with products that contain  menthol, camphor, eucalyptus, intense fragrances or ingredients that cause burning and cooling . Although this sensation can be pleasant and refreshing, it can mean additional irritation for dry and sensitive lips. The rule is simple: if the balm burns, tightens, or you feel the need to reapply after applying it, it’s probably not the best choice for your routine.

What doesn’t taste good on the lips?

When lips are already dry and sensitive, some popular beauty habits can do more harm than good.  Matte lipsticks , especially long-lasting ones, can additionally emphasize dryness and the feeling of tightness, so it is better to use them in moderation or apply a nourishing balm under them. The same applies to  plumping glosses  that cause a burning sensation and achieve the effect of fullness just by mild irritation, which sensitive and chapped lips do not need.

Rough lip scrubs are also on the list of things to skip  . Although they can instantly make the surface smooth, with already dry and chapped lips, additional skin removal can damage the protective barrier and prolong the recovery period. Instead of scrubbing, it is much more beneficial to let the skin gradually renew itself with rich, simple care. Also, pay attention to balms with  menthol, camphor, strong fragrances and essential oils . If you feel a tingling, cooling or tightening sensation after application, this is not a sign that the product is “working”, but that you probably don’t like it.

Night is the right time for more intensive care

While we sleep, there is no need for light formulas that are quickly absorbed, because the night is ideal for  richer care . After washing in the evening, apply a thick layer of neutral balm or ointment, the best formula without perfume and potentially irritating ingredients, to clean and dry lips. Petrolatum-based products are especially useful because they create a protective barrier that reduces water loss during the night. If your lips are chapped, flaky or particularly sensitive, don’t try to remove the cuticle by scrubbing or rubbing, let it regenerate naturally and focus on protecting and restoring the barrier. With this simple nighttime routine, lips usually look and feel significantly softer in the morning.
