Chinese tech giant Huawei launched its Pura 80 series of smartphones on Wednesday, as the company seeks a strong comeback in the premium smartphone market despite years of US sanctions.
Huawei’s latest products culminate in the Chinese company’s ongoing efforts to regain its leading position in the domestic market despite existing US sanctions.
Observers anticipate each new Huawei phone release as a measure of the company’s technological capabilities and market position, after years of disruption to its smartphone business.
Chips and slice
During a live broadcast, Huawei unveiled the Pura 80 series, which includes four smartphones, three of which will be released this month, while the base model will be released next month.
During the broadcast, company official Yu Chengdong highlighted the camera’s features and AI capabilities , but did not provide details about the chips used.
China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (CMIC) manufactures the 910C chip for Huawei, but a shortage of advanced lithography equipment has limited commercial production. This has forced Huawei to lower production targets and delay fulfillment of orders for the chip.
Huawei’s phone releases have attracted a lot of attention as many consider the company to be defying US sanctions.
The unveiling of the Pura 80 series ranked third among the top 10 trending topics on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo. Participants’ opinions varied between praising the phone’s camera capabilities and slim design, and criticizing its high price.
