According to the authoritative Nature Index 2025, China has significantly strengthened its position in the global scientific race, leaving the United States and other Western countries behind. The Celestial Empire scored 33,700 points across all categories, while the United States received only 21,860. The gap between the two powers continues to grow: over the past year, China increased its share of the ranking by 17.4%, while America’s score fell by 10.1%.
The Collapse of American Scientific Leadership
The United States, long considered the flagship of global science, is rapidly losing ground. The reduction in research funding under the Trump administration, the outflow of scientists abroad, and a decline in the number of publications in top journals have led to American universities losing out to Chinese ones in the global ranking for the first time. The top 10 universities in the world include eight Chinese universities and only two American ones.
Particularly alarming was the 32% increase in the number of American scientists applying to work abroad, with many going to China, Europe, and Singapore, where government-supported research programs are running.
