She spoke about her period of recovery, saying that “music saved me” during one of her darkest moments.
Cara Delevingne spoke again about the period that led her to rehab, giving new context to her airport photos in 2022, which had gone viral at the time and caused intense concern.
The 33-year-old actress and model appeared on Alex Cooper’s podcast Call Her Daddy and described how, at the height of her fame, she used alcohol and drugs to disconnect from reality. Among the substances she mentioned were ketamine, GHB and Xanax.
Delevingne said that she felt deep guilt during that time, despite being outwardly in a phase of great success. She also spoke of suicidal ideation and feeling unworthy of what she had achieved.
She said the turning point came one night in a hotel room when a song randomly played on her playlist. It was the same song that had been played at the funeral of a friend of hers who had died of an overdose. “The music at that moment really saved me,” she said.
Delevingne said that night she threw away her drugs and decided to quit. But, she said, she didn’t know at the time that stopping GHB could require medical supervision. “I was taking it every day. I didn’t know that you actually have to do medically supervised detox from it, and I started having seizures,” she said.
She linked her famous airport photos from 2022 to this period. “Those photos were taken right after I had a meltdown at Burning Man and had to go to work,” she said, describing the moment as “a perfect storm.”
Delevingne has spoken in the past about her recovery and how the images from that period served as a warning sign, but in her new interview, she gave a clearer context behind a public image that was then largely treated as a celebrity breakdown.
Her revelation once again highlights how a celebrity’s public meltdown often becomes a spectacle before the real story is understood. For Delevingne, that period was the point where her life began to change.
