Nicolas Cage now has a new official name — Nicolas Cage.

The Oscar-winning actor, born Nicholas Kim Coppola, adopted his stage name as his official name last year, he told Variety in an interview published on Wednesday, May 27.

Cage, 62, said he prefers to be the patriarch of his own family rather than the “clown cousin” of Hollywood’s “royal” family .

Nicolas Cage officially changed his name

“I’m Nic Cage. I legally changed my name last year,” the actor said. “I’m Nic Cage in real life and I’m Nic Cage on camera. It’s better to be the patriarch of my own little family than the clown cousin on the fringes of someone else’s family, so I decided to do it and become ‘Cage.'”

Cage took his last name from the fictional Marvel Comics character Luke Cage, and stated that his family was also related to the pioneering artist John Cage. He was also looking for a “short and easy” name, similar to James Dean.

“So I thought I’d keep the name ‘Nicholas,’ because my father named me Nicolas — in French spelling, which always annoyed me, since everyone adds an ‘h,'” Cage explained. “I don’t know why he gave me the French spelling! But he did.”

The actor also said he doesn’t care if people call him “Nick” or “Nicholas . “

“I’m both! I think people know me as both,” Cage told Variety.

Cage has appeared as Nicolas Cage throughout his career, with the exception of a 1981 television series pilot episode and the 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
