There are sculptural pieces that were made to remain in the same point, while others have the possibility of traveling. A hybrid for these two actions lies in one of the most famous works of the contemporary Mexican artist, Jorge Marín: ‘Alas de México’.
‘Wings of Mexico’, a work that represents freedom in different cities around the world
Within the 30 years of experience that Jorge has as an artist, bronze is the characteristic material used. He is recognized for “incorporating art into everyday life” by making sculptures on main avenues. ‘Alas de México’ is the one that has accumulated the most kilometers in the world, as it has been permanently installed in 13 cities on three continents. The sculpture is composed of two wings made of bronze, mounted on a steel frame on a platform with a metal and cement structure, with three steps. This way you can pose in front of the wings and that’s it! Totally instagrammable photo.
With this artistic project, Marín conveys the importance that wings have as a universal symbol of freedom. They invite us to recognize the value of migration and cultural exchange as factors that enrich societies.
‘Alas de México’ is permanently in 13 of the most energetic cities in the world
It has been 10 years since the ‘Wings of Mexico’ were first exhibited as part of the ‘Wings of the City’ exhibition in Mexico City. In 2010 and to date, this intervention is one of the most photographed in the city. They are currently located on Paseo de la Reforma avenue , very close to the Angel of Independence – an ideal point if you are a city tourist and want to take advantage of sightseeing.
There is also a sculpture in the Burj Plaza, in the United Arab Emirates. In Costa Rica , the wings are found amidst tropical trees in the capital, San José. For the 300 years of existence of San Antonio, United States, they gave these giant bronze wings, in celebration of its history. And to “highlight the union of two cities that share a historical bond,” there is a pair arranged in Madrid, Spain. The Wings of Mexico will land in Toledo, in the Patio de las Armas of Puerta de Bisagra. It will be a temporary setup where it can be visited for six months. It is part of the sculpture’s journey through the European continent, so don’t lose sight of this artistic photo-opportunity.
