At the beginning of the year – and for quite some time before that – the only hairstyle making headlines was the bob. Until now. This winter’s biggest hair trend is made for people with long hair: the so-called French new wave is everywhere. Everyone from Priyanka Chopra to Irina Shayk and Dua Lipa has tried the French hairstyle. According to hairstylist Syd Hayes, it’s a “more subtle take on cool girl hair with soft waves and less pronounced texture.”

While Pre-Raphaelite (read: a giant head of) curls – which were all over the red carpet at the Met Gala in May – were also on trend this year , the French hairstyle is more casual and effortless, with lots of texture yet a brushed-out look. feeling. “It feels refined and more elevated than a classic, flat, beachy wave ,” says Hayes. “Think looser and wispier hair, but with a glossy finish.” The French new wave is perfect because of its imperfection with a polished edge. “It feels like ‘second day hair’, but with shine and minimal effort – the perfect winter-ready style,” adds Hayes.
Longer styles clearly lend themselves to this look — as Dua and Priyanka prove — but if you don’t already own mermaid lengths (and aren’t ready to consider extensions), you can still give the trend a try. “The French New Wave works well with all lengths and textures. On longer hair, the waves tumble and look effortless, while on shorter, bob-length hair, the extra texture is very flattering,” explains Hayes. But whatever your hair length, a good haircut is required. Ask your stylist not to cut your locks straight, so the style looks unkempt.
Sexy, tousled look
How do you recreate the look at home? Start by creating some volume with a mist, like Sam McKnight’s Cool Girl Superlift. Spray this directly into the roots so that your hair looks thick, full and not too flat. Then grab a straightener and make sure to “alternate the direction of each wave so that the hair is unstructured and has a soft appearance.” Finish your hair look with a light mist of hairspray.
