The ‘Olsen Dip’ Is The Noughties Hair Trend Boho Girls Will Love

Every time we see a new hair trend recently, you can be confident it’s made its way from the nineties or noughties archive. The latest example? The ‘Olsen dip’. The Olsen twins have long influenced fashion trends, and with noughties fashion icons like Mary-Kate and Ashley, alongside Sienna Miller, seeing their signature bohemian styles replicated, it was only a matter of time before attention moved to their beauty game, too.

Now, the Olsen’s laidback hair colour is also seeing a revival.

What is the Olsen dip?

The Olsens are known for loosely tailored, free-spirited aesthetic which expertly skirts feeling overdone and lands somewhere effortlessly cool. The same goes for their hair. Neither the colour nor the styling looked over polished. Instead, they frequently wore a grown-out, worn-in root that graduated from mid brown to bright blonde (like a root smudge combined with ombre and dip dye).

Why wear the Olsen dip?

“I like this idea of the dip dye coming back, kind of like a noughties Olsen twins reference,” confirms Luke Hersheson, celebrity hair stylist and CEO at Hershesons. “It’s not in a way where you would see a line, but it features those very, very light ends with a much darker root. It really pushes the idea that you had your hair done a few months ago, as opposed to it been freshly done,” he says. “I really like that blend, but it being much more extreme so it feels a bit rock n roll,” he adds.

How to wear the Olsen dip?

The good news is, there’s plenty of play within the hair colour, whether you want to amp it up with a higher contrast, or keep it soft with nearby tones. Here’s some of our favourite ways to wear it.
