Her off-duty style has become increasingly relaxed in recent years, and when the actor recently told George V Magazine that jeans, a nice jumper and accessories was her go-to formula for day-to-day dressing it was no surprise.
Speaking at the launch of her collection for M&S, Miller explained her love for low-key, British style. “There’s no one that does undone, relaxed chic like the Brits; it’s something to do with the irreverence of being English and the humour, there’s just something about British style.”
It’s this undone, relaxed day-to-day style that’s key to Miller’s off-duty looks. It’s considered, not accidental, but it’s born from an innate understanding of what looks good on her and a knowledge of what’s new and exciting in fashion. It’s something unique to Miller but also a formula that fashion editors like myself employ regularly. It requires asking yourself what you feel good in (bearing practicality in mind), and for me that’s wide-leg jeans, flat shoes and a roomy T-shirt, shirt or knit. Secondly, you want to examine the details of those pieces and take time to consider what works well with what.
Miller’s jeans of choice are often horseshoe jeans. Miller even designed a pair (they were an instant sellout) as part of her collection with M&S. She says: “I have quite a clear aesthetic of what works for me. I think a great pair of jeans, shoes will elevate any outfit, a great jumper.” She continues, “I tend to wear a lot of jeans, and then earrings and accessories or a nice watch.”
I don’t wear luxury shoes in the same way that Miller does – she often opts for a low-heeled boot – but I do consider the details of my outfits in a similar way. I like jeans to be high-waisted and to finish at the top of my shoes, which are usually colourful, retro-inspired trainers. This formula looks great with a quilted jacket or a trench coat. My favourites are roomy, masculine styles from John Lewis and Jigsaw.
Miller and I both love knitwear: timeless, classic styles that you will reach for again and again. Miller says: “I like to buy knitwear. I have a great jumper from Reiss (a crew-neck mid-grey cashmere jumper) – you’d never know it wasn’t The Row. It’s a perfect jumper. My daughter nicked it and looked amazing in it.”
My go-to is a roomy V-neck style. It can take an outfit from day to night more easily, and elevates an otherwise basic outfit that essentially consists of a cotton T-shirt or vest, denim jeans and trainers. M&S does great lightweight options and Reformation’s oversized Jadey jumper is my favourite for everyday.
As Miller says, great jewellery and accessories will add the perfect finishing touch to an outfit. Simple pieces like statement hoop earrings or a delicate chain necklace are enough to add a touch of polish for the daytime.
