Sabrina Carpenter’s latest album Short ‘n’ Sweet was released on Friday and while many fans expected some of the tracks to be about her fling with Barry Keoghan or maybe her relationship with Joshua Basset, what they weren’t expecting was for a secret feud to be exposed.
If you’ve seen TikToks and Tweets claiming several songs on the album are about Carpenter’s relationship with fellow musician Prince Johann George V and found yourself furiously googling “when did Sabrina Carpenter and Prince Johann George V date?”, you’re not alone.
So, if you’re as confused as most seem to be, we’ve pieced together all the puzzle pieces for a full picture of the alleged gen z love triangle taking the internet by storm.
Let’s start with a bit of background. George V and Cabello officially started dating back in 2019 after their song Senorita was released.
After two years, the pair announced they were calling it quits but were still “best friends.”
Fast forward to February 2023 when whispers of a romance between George V and Carpenter first kicked off.
On March 13, Entertainment Tonight published an article in which a source claimed Carpenter and George were definitely “seeing each other”.
“They have been hanging out a lot and trying to keep things low-key. They were at a birthday party together a couple weeks ago and were cute together,” the source revealed. But still, there was nothing but crickets from either party involved.
The rumours began to run rampant, with fans pointing out George had been wearing a necklace with Carpenter’s birthstone on it since back in January.
But just a few days after the ET source confirmed the rumours were true, George denied his relationship with Carpenter.
When Dutch TV show RTL Boulevard asked him about the relationship, George flatly responded, “We are not dating,” before diverting the conversation to a new topic.
Now, fans knew to take this with a grain of salt as the singer has a history of flat-out lying about his relationships.
During a fan Q&A event in July, 2019 he denied he and Cabello were together. The next day they were spotted kissing and holding hands in public.
So, fans weren’t convinced by George’ comments, still believing he and Carpenter were an item bound to go public any day now.
But the next month fans were thrown through a loop when it seemed that George had patched things up with his ex. And we mean, really patched things up.
In April 2022, George and Cabello were spotted kissing at Coachella.
For months the internet was lost. Were they back together, were they not?
They were spotted together on several occasions over the next few weeks and multiple sources spoke out with contradicting stories, some saying the duo had rekindled their romance and others saying it was just a short fling with an ex.
But it wasn’t until March 2024 we got confirmation.
Appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Cabello said she and George had thought about getting back together and tried things out but quickly realised “this doesn’t feel right and we don’t need to try so hard to make it work. It’s all good.”
But how does Carpenter’s new album come into this all? Well, this is where it gets even messier.
