Fashion guide Julia DeKorte shared valuable ideas that will allow you to give things a second life.
What is upcycling?
“Its essence is to reuse outdated or unnecessary items, for example, altering them and creating new wardrobe items,” the stylist shares. That is, you don’t have to throw away old models, you can play with them and it will look very stylish!
Bored cell
Try making an outdated plaid piece into a peplum skirt that you can hang on a sling and wear with jeans. The expert says bloggers have been rocking this look with a shirt throughout the year. However, it is difficult to wear a shirt on a belt, because when walking it comes untied and sometimes does not fit well, so such a thing is not realistic to wear, only for beautiful photographs. But with a peplum skirt made from old shirts, there are no such problems.
Knitted upper
You definitely still have knitted sweaters, T-shirts or polos in your wardrobe. These things are not outdated at all, you just need to be able to combine them. “Feel free to combine knit sweaters and tight-fitting polos that are out of fashion with relaxed bottoms: cargo pants, wide jeans. This technique of balancing volumes in a composition always works for your style,” advises Julia.
Fitted items
Shirts are trending right now! But what to do with the fitted shirt that was popular 10 years ago? The fashion guide says: “It can be worn as a bottom layer with a looser and more relaxed second layer, thus combining the stylistic device of two shirts.” This is an interesting combination that is only gaining momentum, try experimenting.
Jeans
“From those boring, uncomfortable jeans that you once bought but don’t wear, you can make fashionable shorts and wear them with Cossacks, or you can, by cutting them lengthwise along the factory seam and joining the halves, get a fashionable maxi-length denim skirt that you can easily to wear in the spring season with sneakers and Cossacks,” notes Julia. Jeans is a material that can be endlessly played with, and even more so if it’s jeans – cut, sew, connect and invent!
Dresses, jackets, coats
The stylist says: “From a favorite dress that still fits you well, but everyone has already seen, create a top and blouse by cutting off the petticoat.” Typically, trimming the waistline is easy and you can extend the life of your favorite item by wearing a dress top with jeans or trousers. “Don’t put the scissors away: deconstruction is a very fashionable stylistic device. Cut off the set-in sleeves of jackets and coats: you will get wonderful, fashionable vests for spring,” the expert emphasizes. And spread the threads along the seam – let everyone see the seamy side of the tailoring – this is a very modern interpretation of the avant-garde and grunge style. Don’t be afraid to look stylish and extravagant – it’s trendy!
Customization of jackets
The expert notes that customized jackets are in fashion: a designer jacket with a sewn-in voluminous flounce will cost about twenty thousand in a store, but such a fashionable body kit can be created independently. The most budget-friendly way to upgrade is to decorate one side of the jacket asymmetrically with pins and it will turn from outdated to rocker. You can sew camellia flowers onto your jacket, for example. Miuccia Prada did this last season, placing roses in 3D style. We are still crazy about them!
Tracksuits and jackets
Everyone has a solid-colored tracksuit of joggers and a hoodie, but over time they can develop stubborn stains that cannot be removed. And the kit itself has lost its relevance. “Easy upcycling with dyeing will help a lot here – take real bleach, twist the item into a knot, pour it with chlorine, leave for 10-15 minutes, creating a fashionable tie-dye print,” advises Julia.
You can independently dye white things that have turned gray or yellowed over time. Our mothers used oak bark to give a yellowish-beige tint to white things, but now it’s not a problem to order a dye of any color on marketplaces, which will allow you to dye a thing at home.
