The Substance is easily one of, if not the best, horror movies to have been released in 2024, and it’s now available to stream. This is really big news for people who haven’t had the chance to watch the movie in cinemas yet, and it’s really a film that horror fans have to watch.

The Substance stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, and it’s quickly gone on to become one of the must-see films in 2024. The movie was written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, and she’s becoming one of the up-and-coming directors to take notice of.

As of October 31st, the body horror movie The Substance is available to watch on the streaming service Mubi, which is the perfect time to release such a terrific horror movie. Body horror has been seeing something of a renaissance over the past few years, with high profile releases like Brandon Cronenberg’s Infinity Pool.

What people seemed to love about the movie was that it wasn’t afraid to shock its audiences. The movie follows Elizabeth Sparkle (played by Demi Moore), a former Hollywood movie star who is now the host of a TV show. However, on her 50th birthday, she’s told by her boss that she’s too old to keep on hosting the show, and they want to find a younger and sexier version of her. This is when Elizabeth ends up being offered something called ‘the substance’, which promises to turn her into a younger and better version of herself. However, it doesn’t go quite as planned, and Elizabeth ends up going through a pretty traumatic and shocking ordeal.

As a body horror movie, The Substance features some incredibly gruesome scenes. The Substance doesn’t shy away from showing the viewers as much as it can get away with, which means that it’s an incredibly graphic and gory movie, but it does it in a way that is unique. The film isn’t just about shock value. It’s about the struggles of being a woman working in Hollywood, especially if that woman is over a certain age. This central message is made very clear, and the writer/director perfectly uses the body horror subgenre to demonstrate it. It’s also wonderful to see Demi Moore back on the big screen. She delivers a barnstorming performance in the movie, which also features a star-making turn from Moore’s co-star, Margaret Qualley.

The Substance ended up grossing just over $37 million at the worldwide box office, which is very impressive given that the movie was made on a tiny budget of $17,500,000. The film also had a relatively limited release in cinemas worldwide, and yet it managed to attract a sizable audience and there was a lot of buzz, especially after the movie’s screening at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The movie’s success proves that people are just looking to watch more interesting movies these days.
