Many of the mafiosi were released due to good behavior, even though they had been convicted of shocking crimes, reports the Guardian. More than 20 mafia gangsters have been released from prison in Italy in the past three months, some of them for good behavior. The leaders include mafia bosses who worked in the mafia families of the Sicilian capital Palermo, and they have never denied the existence of Cosa Nostra, or the Sicilian mafia, writes the British newspaper Guardian.
Many of the mafiosi were released due to good behavior, even though they had been convicted of shocking crimes, reports the Guardian. Judges, prosecutors, victims’ and relatives are scared.
One of the mafiosi, Raffaele Galatolo, 74, was released on parole after the court declared him a “model prisoner.” Freedom came, even though Galatolo and his brother Vincenzo have been sentenced to life in prison for murder. They are said to have been the leaders of the so-called “death chamber”.
In the room, the victims were strangled to death on the orders of the then leader of the Sicilian Mafia. A week earlier, Giuseppe Corona, who was serving time in a maximum security prison reserved for mafia bosses, was released. He had been in prison for the maximum period of time awaiting trial, which was constantly delayed.
Families of victims killed by the Sicilian mafia now fear that mafia bosses who have been released from prison will return to the areas they once controlled. Many mafiosi have refused to cooperate with the authorities, which has shown that they are interested in continuing in the mafia.
Federico Varese, a professor of criminology at Oxford University who has written about the mafia, reminds us that joining the Sicilian mafia is done through a ritual and membership is lifelong. In the ritual, a burning image of a saint is placed in the hands of a mafia recruit and the mafia members declare: “You will burn like this image if you betray or try to leave this organization.”
The release of mafia members is being questioned by many experts. One of them is Salvatore Borsellino, the brother of the notorious judge Paolo Borsellino, who was killed by the mafia. “Although he has always refused to cooperate with the law, he is still being released from prison. It is a fatal blow in the fight against the mafia,” he said.
The nephew of Nino Agostino , the policeman shot by the mafia, agrees with the criticism. “The mafia members sentenced to life imprisonment who are eligible for parole still have secrets about unsolved mafia murders that they have refused to confess to. Therefore, their release sends a bad signal,” Nino Morana Agostino told the La Repubblica newspaper.
Federico Varese, a professor of criminology at the University of Oxford , says that mafiosi are taking advantage of legal changes in Italy that allow for freedom or suspended prison sentences for good behavior. “Prison authorities are not contacting prosecutors. The authorities don’t understand how dangerous it can be to let mafia bosses go free,” Varese said. Researchers fear that the mafia is reorganizing itself by trying to assemble its governing body to decide on matters after a long break.
