Benfica coach Jorge Jesus is never afraid of voicing his opinion or going against the tide when he does so, and it was the case once again when he spoke about the topical issue of racism in football.
“I don’t know exactly what happened, but these days all this about racism is very fashionable,” began Jorge Jesus when speaking in a press conference on Wednesday.
“As a citizen, I have the right to think my way and to form a concrete opinion once I know what happened in that moment.
“These days anything you say against a black person is a sign of racism, and the same thing to a white person is not a sign of racism.
“It’s a wave that is taking over the world.
Thank you for watching
“But maybe there was racism because I don’t know what they said to that coach.”
Jorge Jesus has never been one to shy away from controversy, having recently criticised Barcelona‘s playing style as well as the lack of passion displayed by Cristiano Ronaldo and, particularly, Lionel Messi when compared with the late Diego Maradona.
Benfica play Standard Liege away from home on Thursday in the Europa League. They have already secured qualification from Group D, but will advance in first place should they better Rangers‘ result against Lech.
