The band had been in talks for a series of shows and even contacted Victoria Beckham about a possible cameo appearance – the entire band was keen to repeat the success of the recent shows. However, insiders say the bitter split between the members has led to Ginger leaving the group.
“Geri has been through enough with all the drama between her husband and his assistant – it was a tough enough time – and she just lost patience with Mel and her little jibes and teasing. She’s gone and without Geri, there’s no way this will work. She was the driving force behind the band in the past, but now she doesn’t want to deal with Mel at all, let alone share the stage with her,” the insider said.
Last week, Mel took another dig at her former friend, wishing her a happy 75th birthday online and posting a series of unflattering photos from their heyday, in what appeared to be a reference to her previous jibes that Geri had lied about her age in the past. Insiders say there was more teasing behind the scenes, which has left Geri furious, having endured a difficult six months amid allegations that her Formula One boss husband Christian Horner cheated on her with an assistant.
They had always had a complicated relationship, but now everything had become really complicated and no one could fix the relationship between them – so everything fell apart again.
The row has only served to confirm rumours that the Spice Girls’ reunion at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party in April was strained. The star-studded bash saw all five Spice Girls in attendance, but Mel and Geri’s relationship was said to be strained. Despite posing for a photo with Victoria, Mel C and Emma Bunton, the singers’ smiles were strained as tension and discord were palpable in the air.
“When it came to the group photo, Geri kept as far away from Mel as possible and it was awkward to watch. Geri wanted to be there to celebrate and laugh with everyone, not discuss with Mel the awkward things she said about her,” the insider said.
