Despite all that we know about the dangers of the sun, some people continue to use milking grease, which is harmful to health. Zoom in on this product applied too often to the skin of vacationers in search of a tanned body.

1. Milking fat is primarily for cows

No misunderstanding! Milking grease is not called that for nothing. It is indeed a substance used by farmers to protect their hands as well as their cows’ udders from the cold, bad weather and during milking. No more cracks, chapping and teat disease for these brave animals. Professional swimmers also use this material to protect their skin from the aggression of water and the cold. So yes, this product has protective and restorative properties, particularly against stretch marks. But that’s where it ends…

2. How did the milking fat end up on the beaches?

Tanning* is one of the major cultural revolutions of the 20th century. Once considered the preserve of peasants, tanned skin is now highly sought after. In the 1970s, there was even a boom in shiny bodies! But disillusionment soon set in: milking fat doesn’t make you tan, it makes you burn.

3. The magnifying glass effect of milking fat

The combination of “sun + fat” is equivalent to “magnifying glass + sun”. Do you remember that experience when, as a child, you put a magnifying glass between the sun and some straw and the little pile quickly started to smoke? Well, that’s what happens to your skin when you cover it with milking grease at the beach! To quote the figures from dermatologist Pascale Neulat, contacted for the subject, the sun multiplies the natural aging of the skin by eight. So using such an oily substance that is not suitable for protecting against UV rays means increasing the risk of skin aging even more. According to Dr. Neulat, “milking grease activates tanning because it does not protect. Some people have the illusion of being protected because once applied, it forms a thick layer, but they are mistaken.”

4. What do you think about milking grease with a protection index?

For Pascale Neulat, a certain collective awareness has been created around the dangers incurred after poor exposure to the sun. Nevertheless, manufacturers offer milking fats containing a protection factor that is often very low to reassure consumers. Pascale’s response? “Milking fat and protection factor are incompatible! It is already extremely difficult to make a good sun cream with an effective protection factor, so for this fat that does not provide basic protection, it is impossible.”

5. Hello, wrinkles, blisters and/or melanomas!

Wrinkles and spots on the skin are signs of aging caused by poor exposure to the sun. Because milking fat does not protect, sunburn can happen quickly! For the lucky ones, the damage will be limited to unsightly blisters. For others, it can go as far as the appearance of melanomas and other skin cancers. But for everyone, when they reach a certain age, their skin will look like a dried prune! This product also tends to clog the pores of the skin and can cause the appearance of spots. Enough to review our vision of tanning and reconsider self -tanners  more seriously!
