Are Frosty Lips Fashionable Again?

“When lipstick doesn’t look good, it’s the rest of the makeup that’s the problem. Everything has to be coordinated — you can’t just put on frosty lipstick and expect it to look good,” wrote one comment. While 2000s makeup trends like thin brows and metallic eyeshadow have resurfaced on the app, the split opinion on frosty lips may be proof that the era of the clean girl aesthetic isn’t over just yet.

Beauty lovers have a lot to say about the return of this Y2K classic

On TikTok, nostalgia for beauty trends is in full swing. Recently, users of the platform have become particularly obsessed with Ballerina Shoes, an ice-pink shade of L’Oréal lipstick. After this coveted product began to disappear from the shelves, a dose of skepticism appeared. While some swear by this color, others consider it to be another passing microtrend that will soon fade into oblivion.

In the late nineties and early 2000s, frosty lipsticks were extremely approved — worn by icons Kate Moss and Paris Hilton. Recognizable for their pearly shine and ability to reflect light, they have become a symbol of Y2K aesthetics and a synonym for beauty trendsetters. They were most often worn in cool, baby-pink tones, but also in more experimental shades such as gold or icy purple. Back then, frosty lips were far less controversial than they are today.

Although TikTok is known for modern reinterpretations of old beauty trends, the “Ballerina Shoes” lipstick flooding the feed is actually very similar to the frosty lipsticks that dominated the red carpet in the early 2000s. Because it’s so different from the brownish nudes and warm pinks we’re used to, some are hesitant to fully embrace this trend. As the shade is distinctly baby pink, some makeup lovers prefer to reach for other frosty lipsticks, which are considered to suit different skin tones better.

In true TikTok fashion, this beauty trend has become the subject of heated debate among fans and critics alike.
