Health professionals remind us that sexual activity in water carries some risks that are often overlooked. Here are five things to know before taking the plunge:
1) Water is not a lubricant
It may seem counterintuitive, but water can actually decrease the body’s natural lubrication and the results can be more friction, irritation or discomfort after intercourse, especially in a chlorinated pool or in salt water.
“Lubricants reduce friction during sexual intercourse and can make penetration more comfortable,” notes the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) .
2) A wet swimsuit is not your best friend
Staying in a wet swimsuit for several hours can cause irritation and create an environment conducive to infection for some people. Experts therefore recommend changing quickly after swimming and opting for dry, breathable clothing whenever possible.
3) Going to urinate afterwards can help
This is probably the most well-known piece of advice. It is recommended to urinate within 30 minutes of sexual intercourse to help eliminate some bacteria that may be present near the urethra.
“Peeing, the small gesture that will protect you from ‘post-coital’ cystitis,” we can read on the Doctissimo website.
However, it should be noted that this habit does not offer guaranteed protection.
4) Swimming pools do not protect against STIs or pregnancy
Chlorine, salt water or lake water do not protect against sexually transmitted infections .
“Urinating after sex does not eliminate bacteria or viruses from the vagina since the urethra and vagina are two separate openings,” explains Dr. Lauren Stewart, a pelvic medicine specialist quoted by Health.
Therefore , condoms remain the recommended method of protection.
5) Listen to your body
Burning, pain, itching, or discomfort that persists after intercourse should not be ignored. According to several specialists, persistent urinary symptoms or pain can sometimes be associated with irritation or infection and warrant a medical consultation.
Because between a romantic moment by a lake and an unexpected visit to the pharmacy, we generally prefer to keep the memory of the former and enjoy our summer without any worries!
