Sony Pictures and the Chinese toy manufacturer Pop Mart have officially confirmed the development of a Labubu feature film. As reported by “The Hollywood Reporter ,” “Wonka” director Paul King has been attached to the project. King will also reportedly co-write the screenplay with Tony Award winner Steven Levenson.
The project was reportedly announced at an event in Paris celebrating the tenth anniversary of the “Monsters” universe, which includes Labubu. King and Labubu creator Kasing Lung jointly presented the project to the audience. While plot details have not yet been released, it is confirmed that the film will bring Labubu’s playful world to life through a blend of live-action and animation.
A monster with a history
Lung, a Hong Kong-born artist who grew up in the Netherlands, created Labubu and the associated “Monsters” world in a series of picture books in 2015. However, the real hype came later when Pop Mart acquired the license. Since then, the character with the shaggy fur and sharp teeth has built a worldwide fan base, including among celebrities, and is almost always sold out.
Back in November, “The Hollywood Reporter” exclusively speculated that a Labubu movie might be in the works. Now it’s official.
Proven filmmakers on board
Paul King is known for his warmhearted, imaginative productions: He directed both “Paddington” films and most recently “Wonka,” starring Timothée Chalamet . Alongside King, Michael Schaefer (“The Martian”) and Wenxin She (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”) are producing. Kasing Lung also serves as an executive producer.
Levenson, as co-writer of the screenplay, also boasts an impressive resume: He won a Tony Award for the script of the Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen ” and wrote the screenplay for the film “Tick, Tick… Boom!”. He also contributed to series such as “Masters of Sex”.
