The star of the series “Euphoria” and the film “The Housekeeper” has appeared since Friday in an advertisement for the sports betting platform Novig, of which she is a shareholder. Many female athletes have criticized the “sexualization” of women’s sports.

The star of the series Euphoria and the film The Housekeeper has appeared since Friday, September 11th in a commercial for the Novig platform, of which she is a shareholder. For fifty-eight seconds, the 29-year-old actress poses mostly nude with sports equipment (boxing gloves, balls, rackets, golf clubs, etc.) in order to promote betting, “not on war, not on death, not on politics. Just sports.”
Following its release on social media, the ad triggered a barrage of criticism from numerous elite female athletes who saw it as a “regression .” Former Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus said she was “furious . ” “Not only is this an affront to all the women who have dedicated their lives to perfecting their sport, but also to all those who appreciate sport for what it truly is: teamwork, friendship, dedication, excellence, unity…” the four-time Olympic champion wrote on Instagram, condemning “a world where the monetization of women’s bodies and the sexualization of women’s sport are still commonplace .

“Disgusting”: French triathlete Mathilde Tily wrote that “no amount of money should convince a woman to offer this image” at a time when female athletes “are still fighting for the same recognition, the same bonuses… and much more.”
Australian swimmer Brianna Throssell, gold medalist in the 4 × 100m relay at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, films herself in various competition pools and declares: “This is what women in sport look like, Sydney Sweeney!”
American sprinter and Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas echoed the message. As did British four-time European champion Amy Hunt, who finished fourth in the 200m at the Ultimate Championships on Sunday in Budapest, who declared in the mixed zone: “Sydney Sweeney, this is what women’s sport looks like!”
