Hwang Dong-hyuk as executive producer is behind new Netflix drama about the world of gambling and fraud
The Dealer series follows Geongwa, interpreted by Jung So-min, an extremely skilled croupie in a casino, whose lives are experiencing a drastic turnaround ahead of her wedding. After losing her life’s savings in predatory real estate fraud, Geongwa is forced to return to the world of gambling with the high stakes she once left behind. The story explores her downfall into the underworld, where she has to use long-suppressed talents to navigate systemic corruption and regain control of her own life.
The series is directed by Choi Young-hwan, and the script is signed by Ohnooy and Lee Tae-young. The production represents a significant change for Hwang, which transitions into a production role after physical and mental exhaustion caused by directing each episode of the Squid Game series. The series was further reinforced by a strong supporting cast, featuring the Ryoo Seung-boom, Lee Soo-hyuk and Ryu Kyung-soo. Although the project retains Hwang’s distinctive interest in socioeconomic struggles and “psychology of extreme situations,” he replaces the arena’s literal violence with psychological tension at the gambling table.
