Rare Blue Diamond Auctioned For 19 Million Euros

Bids for the 10.3-carat diamond, known as The Mediterranean Blue, began at 9 million francs. The gem was eventually sold to a private collector from the US. The identity of the buyer has not been released. The extraordinary stone attracted worldwide attention for its rare color and high quality, resulting in a fierce bidding war.

An exceptionally rare blue diamond was auctioned in Geneva on Tuesday evening for 17.9 million Swiss francs 19 million euros, auction house Sotheby’s announced.

The Mediterranean Blue

The Mediterranean Blue is a new discovery from the renowned Cullinan mine in South Africa and is known for its intensely vivid blue colour. Since its discovery earlier this year, the diamond has attracted a lot of interest within the international diamond industry.The sale price is not a record amount, by the way. The most expensive diamond sold to date is the Pink Star, 59.6 carats, which was auctioned in 2017 for 71 million dollars.
