He tops list as Richest Young Brit, The Duke of Westminster is one of the youngest billionaires in the U.K.
The Duke of Westminster is soon losing one part of his billionaire bachelor status.
Hugh Grosvenor, 33, topped the rich list for the under 40s in Great Britain. He took 15th place on the overall list, dropping from the 11th spot in the 2023 rankings.
The Duke of Westminster’s family’s net worth stands at $12.8 billion, according to the outlet. Hugh inherited his father’s title and wealth in 2016, making him the youngest billionaire in the U.K. — and landed him the title of “England’s most eligible bachelor” in British media.
Hugh is chair of the Grosvenor Group, an investment and real estate group that manages rural estates and supports charitable initiatives, such as investing in food and agricultural technology that is environmentally responsible and works towards a more sustainable food system. He’s also Chair of the Westminster Group, which provides grants for youth outreach programs for at-risk children and works closely with groups that support families and schools in their local communities.
Hugh is closely connected to the British royal family: as one of Prince George’s seven godparents, he joined Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter Zara and other family friends at the future king’s 2013 christening at St. James’s Palace.
The Duke of Westminster followed a family tradition: his mother, Natalia, is one of Prince William’s godparents while Hugh counts King Charles as his own godfather.
Hugh is also reportedly one of Prince Archie’s godfathers, though Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen not to publicly reveal the names of their son’s godparents.
Due to their many connections, members of the royal family will likely attend the Duke of Westminster’s upcoming wedding, taking place on June 7. During a May 7 visit to Chester Cathedral, where they’ll exchange their vows in a few weeks, the Duke and future Duchess of Westminster highlighted good causes the Westminster Foundation helps in the city.
“The next time we’ll be here will be slightly more nerve-wracking,” Hugh joked to the Very Rev. Tim Stratford, Dean of Chester.
According to the Sunday Times, the Duke of Westminster reluctantly made the decision not to invite Prince Harry and Meghan, who moved to California in 2020 after stepping back as working members of the royal family, because he reportedly wants to avoid a clash amid their family rift.
An unnamed friend of Prince William and Prince Harry was quoted in The Sunday Times this weekend as saying, “It’s incredibly sad it has come to this. Hugh is one of very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both. He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realizes it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding. He wanted to avoid anything overshadowing the day, especially for Olivia, and doesn’t want any awkwardness.”
