There are more options than you think
In designer collections they were combined with fluffy miniskirts and sandals, as well as with other shirts and jackets. They can be worn as a dress, instead of an office shirt to work, or even used as part of an evening outfit with long gloves.
“Whether you wear a polo shirt with evening dresses, tails or miniskirts, this new approach allows you to add a touch of sporty style and ease to your look. We’ve seen this with A-list and street style styles: Hailey Bieber has paired it with leather and jeans, Sienna Miller has paired it with a miniskirt and platform sandals, and others have paired it with satin skirts or chic pants.” — says stylist Masha Hemingway
A buttoned-up shirt will give you a formal, business-like look. It should be tucked into shorts, a skirt or trousers. “This is the easiest, fastest and most effective way to give a polo shirt the most professional and formal look,” assures Masha
Choose the right size
Make sure the shirt fits correctly. Too big can look dull and sag – or then go for a frankly oversized one. “If the shirt is just right for you, you can pair it with a fitted pencil skirt to create an elegant look that is equally suitable for a meeting with friends or colleagues, as well as for a walk,” emphasizes Hemingway.
If the model is dark in color, it can be worn with a light-colored skirt. This pair will give a casual, but at the same time elegant look. A skirt with a textured finish can also add a touch of sophistication, which is perfect for a date, hangout, or dinner out. Monochrome is a winning option for those who want to appear visually slimmer.
Wear skinny jeans or trousers
Since polos have a utilitarian aesthetic, this pairing can soften the overall look. “Dark-colored jeans almost always look more professional in the workplace, while light-colored jeans are better suited for casual events or going on a picnic. With trousers you will get a classic business casual look,” says Hemingway.
Combine with heels
Whether you’re wearing a pencil skirt, skinny jeans or palazzo pants, add a pair of heels to quickly elevate your look. “Heels instantly elevate an outfit, helping women look elegant in no time. Depending on the situation and personal preference, wedges may be a more practical choice as they are more comfortable,” explains the stylist.
Multi-layering
For the office, you can wear a polo under a blazer. For shopping or a date, a shirt with a sweater with a cutout instead of a traditional button-down blouse, so that the collar peeks out above the neckline, would be nice. This layered look will create a relaxed and comfortable look.
