Beginning her press tour season with a “haute girl walk” in front of the Palazzo del Cinema at the debut of her new erotic thriller Babygirl, the UK premiere of her upcoming Netflix mystery drama, The Perfect Couple, proved Kidman’s prowess on the red carpet.
Despite having a front-row seat to see Meadow Walker introduce the look on the runway, we weren’t privy to Kidman’s insights on the dress at the time à la Jared Leto’s viral love-at-first-reaction to Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2017 menswear show. However, with Kim Kardashian wearing the white version to the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscars After Party, Kidman may have been waiting for the right moment to don this couture-inspired dress.
The piece itself is a strapless silhouette made from a sumptuous black satin. The silhouette is body-conscious and features an angular protrusion that juts out upward from the bodice. The design also references the original creations of Cristóbal Balenciaga, specifically the “envelope dress” he made in 1967.
Like current creative director Denma’s adoration for the Maison’s archives, Kidman’s own history with Balenciaga is steeped in legacy. As you might recall, one of the 57-year-old’s most memorable red carpet moments came courtesy of a red halterneck gown designed by Nicolas Ghesquière and worn to the 2007 Academy Awards. Then, 15 years later, she made her catwalk debut at the luxuriate’s FW22 couture show in a draped metallic gown.
Kidman also made her relationship with the brand a family affair by bringing her eldest daughter, 16-year-old Sunday Rose, to their FW24 Haute Couture collection presented during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. She sat alongside fellow Australian export Naomi Watts and her teenage daughter, Kai Schreiber. The new limited series sees Kidman co-star with Watts’ ex-husband Liev Schreiber as the seemingly ideal pair.
The show follows one of Nantucket’s wealthiest families become embroiled in unexpected trouble after a dead body appears in the lead-up to a family wedding. Co-starring The White Lotus’ Meghann Fahy and Dakota Fanning, The Perfect Couple is set to drop on Netflix on September 5. Watch the trailer below.
