Meghan Markle is known for announcing projects but failing to complete them or continuing them. In August 2023, she and Prince Harry acquired the film rights to the novel “Meet Me at the Lake,” announcing that it would be made into a movie for Netflix. The acquisition cost $2.9 million. The novel, a romance written by author Carly Fortune and said to be based on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, became a bestseller.
However, three years have passed since that news broke, and there is still no news of its completion. What’s more, it hasn’t even been announced who will play the male and female leads. Some media outlets, such as the Daily Mail, are saying things like, “It’s in limbo,” and “Is this another case of ‘we’re going to shoot, we’re going to shoot’ scam?”
Meanwhile, author Fortune appeared on a podcast and spoke about the progress of the film’s production. Fortune first explained why she entrusted the film rights to the Duchess. She revealed that before transferring the rights, she “spent time talking on the phone with Meghan and the film producer at Archwell.” Archwell is, as you know, the production company of Meghan and Prince Harry. “I felt that Meghan and the producer understood this story and its essence,” Fortune said. “It’s a love story, but it also goes deep into the relationship between mother and daughter. We talked at length about our roles as parents and how these love stories can mean more than that.” She said the conversation was “meaningful.”
Fortune emphasized his complete trust in the Duchess, saying, “This is a story about grief, and it’s also a work about mental health. That’s why I felt confident entrusting it to the two of them.” However, according to Fortune, the script is not yet finished and is still being revised. He said that a director has already been chosen, but did not mention their name.
Sources have previously stated that streaming services like Netflix prioritize speed, implying that Meghan and Harry were taking too long to complete their projects. Incidentally, one year after the announcement of “Meet Me in the Sky,” in 2024, it was reported that Amazon Prime was producing “Every Year After,” another drama based on Fortune’s novel. This series has already been completed and began streaming on Amazon Prime this month.
When the princess acquired the film rights, she showed her enthusiasm by saying, “The love story depicted in this novel is irreplaceable to me. I can’t imagine a more perfect couple.” I’ll patiently wait to see if it will be completed.
