Marilyn Monroe immortalized in ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ Barbie

Marilyn Monroe would have turned 100 this year, and Mattel is marking the occasion with a massive honor: a Barbie commemorating one of the most revered (and instantly recognizable) celebrity women in history.

Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, Monroe transformed herself into a movie star whose platinum blond hair, cutting-edge fashion and screen presence are still iconic generations later. The newest Barbie Signature doll captures that, recreating Marilyn’s look from her performance of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” in “Gentlemen Prefer Blonds:” a bold pink gown with a sleek silhouette and oversized bow, paired with dramatic elbow-length gloves and sparkling diamond jewelry.

Mattel says it worked with the Estate of Marilyn Monroe LLC throughout the design process to capture Monroe’s likeness and the details of her on-screen ensemble. And this doll joins a long history of Marilyn Monroe Barbies: Barbie as Marilyn Monroe in “The Seven Year Itch” in 1997, as Marilyn Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” in two different outfits in 1997, as Marilyn Monroe in 2001, as Marilyn in a “How to Marry a Millionaire” gift set in 2002, and as Marilyn Monroe in the Blonde Ambition Collection Pink Label Collection in 2009.

The newest Marilyn Monroe Barbie doll was created to celebrate not only Monroe’s centennial, but a legacy that continues to influence entertainment, fashion and pop culture. Monroe starred in countless films, won a Golden Globe for her role in “Some Like It Hot,” and became one of the first women in Hollywood to establish her own production company after she founded Marilyn Monroe Productions.

Monroe’s Barbie Signature Doll is a celebration of everything she was, from movie star to artist to boundary-breaking businesswoman.
