Firefighters estimate that 200 to 300 pigs were inside the burning building in Friesoythe and have most likely perished, a spokesperson explained. Around 200 emergency personnel are on site battling the flames. Two excavators are currently dismantling the barn.

It is still unclear how the fire broke out. When the fire brigade arrived in the evening, one half of the two-part barn was already engulfed in flames. The fire then spread from this empty side to the section where the animals were housed, according to the spokesperson.

A warning from the emergency services indicated that thick smoke was rising. They advised people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution. According to the spokesperson, no one was injured. Farmers are reportedly assisting the firefighters, as water supplies are particularly difficult in the rural area.
