The collection, titled “Italian Beauty,” riffed on Old Hollywood meets classic Italy, with plenty of influence from the Material Girl. Vittoria Ceretti opened in a cone-bra bustier dress, the dominant silhouette and one that recalled one of the star’s signature ’80s looks. As did the corset top and pinstriped suiting combos with trailing suspenders.
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana also turned out cropped jackets worn with microshorts; fringed, beaded flapper dresses (which seem to be a recurring motif this season); and sinuous floral gowns. They played with transparency with sheer mesh pieces and a see-through trench coat. And there were molto Italiano touches like cross earrings and vertiginous heels.
At the show’s end, the designers came out for their bow and made a beeline for their muse, wrapping her in a warm (and very Italian) embrace.
Material Girls Get Their Due at Dolce & Gabbana
A Madonna front row, the designers riffed on some of her classic looks. Dolce & Gabbana’s show today opened on models arranged around the kind of staircase heroines used to make dramatic entrances in Golden Age movies. Each one, from Irina Shayk to Mariacarla Boscono, sported the same blonde, Marilyn-meets-Madonna hairdo. And who else was there on hand to take in the tribute but Madge herself, in a face- (but not fame-) obscuring black lace veil?
