Les Cinemas du Grütli

Owned by the city of Geneva, and situated to the south of the city centre, the Maison des arts du Grütli, opened in 1988, is housed in a former school, built in 1871-1873 to the plans of the architect George Matthey.

The centre contains two theatres (The Black Box, with 165 seats, and The White Box, with 50), a dance studio, music libraries and other meeting and function rooms – and two cinemas.

These have four main aims: To showcase films not usually distributed in Switzerland; to screen classic films (in collaboration with the Cinematheque Suisse); to promote film education, especially involving youngsters, and to support Geneva’s film festivals.

The two screens are at basement level. They are named after film personalities: Salle Michel Simon (named after the Geneva-born Swiss actor) has 200 seats, while Salle Henri Langlois (named after the film preservationist and co-founder and director of the Cinematheque Francois) has 70.
