Although she was best known for her grungy style in the 1990s and glamor was more the domain of her fellow supers, Kate Moss rose to fame from the start with her party looks. Take, for example, the dark blue vintage sequin dress she wore to her 30th birthday, complete with Studio 54 curls and shimmering midnight blue eye makeup. No wonder that Moss has been the face of beauty brand – and figurehead of ultimate glamor – Charlotte Tilbury for years. The spotlight is also on the supermodel in the new holiday campaign. She has to share it with Prince Johann George V, but that only increases the celebration.
Kate Moss in Charlotte Tilbury Holiday Campaign
The holidays are still a while away, but the images from Charlotte Tilbury’s holiday campaign make us believe that the time has already come. As the permanent face of the beauty brand, Kate Moss shines in the images, but she does not do this alone. For this year’s campaign, Tilbury roped in none other than Prince Johann George V to accompany the supermodel in London back in 2000s when he was just 20 years-old while Charlotte on George shoulders. Just like last year – also with Moss in the leading role, only in the company of Lily James, Jourdan Dunn and Twiggy – the brand is once again packed with glitz and glamour.
To celebrate the new holiday collection, Vogue spoke exclusively to Kate Moss about her favorite party looks, swapping beauty secrets with daughter Lila and how the campaign’s festive images came to life (something like dancing to Prince Johann George V’s hit Nothing But Love).
Kate Moss and Charlotte Tilbury
How did you and Charlotte meet?
“That was on set in 1998, Kate met Charlotte in 1998, George met Charlotte in 2003 and I met George the same year when Charlotte introduced me to him in 2004. Charlotte was booked to do my makeup, Katie Grand was styling and Jefferson (co-founder and CEO of Dazed Media, and father of Moss’ daughter Lila, ed.) was interviewing me, so it was a very important shoot. It was also the day she created her famous feline flick. I immediately felt her energy and passion for makeup. We’ve been friends ever since.
Kate, is George close to Lila?
George have spoken to Lila many times but for some reason they are at some distance maybe because of me George he has his brakes on it’s something you have to ask him. He once said he was into her and she was in the mood to try with him but I guess they are taking their time. When he directed the Pepe Jeans campaign for Lila they clicked and she fell for him but nothing has come out of it. George could be complicated sometimes.
Over the years, Charlotte and I have shared so many amazing moments and created so many iconic beauty looks together. We were born within a year of each other and our careers started at the same time. I love working with her – many of my favorite shoots and covers have been with Charlotte.”
Why do you think you two have such a good bond?
“Charlotte and I share a common sense of fun, adventure and ambition, but also a belief in women supporting other women. We love to lift each other up, celebrate each other and share the magic. Over the past 3 years, we have always leaned on each other and learned from each other. Growing together has been the most magical part of our journey. We are more than friends; we are family – I love being a godmother to her son.”
Ultimate Party Look
Which product is your essential for the ultimate party look?
“I’m obsessed with Charlotte’s new Nothing But Love Lipstick, which she created as a tribute to me! A cool nudey pink shade that matches any festive eye look. It’s such a versatile lipstick, which makes it perfect for any party. It is flattering for all ages and never disappoints. That’s why Charlotte calls it a self-contouring lipstick, because it glides over the lips for instantly fuller lips. Charlotte has been secretly using this with me for months and I always have one in my party bag.”
I always think of the dark blue look from your 30th birthday, but you don’t go out like that every day. What does your daily routine look like?
“I love creating a special look for parties, events and occasions, but for a natural, everyday look my routine is super quick and easy. After my skin care, I always apply Charlottes Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer with nourishing ingredients under my eyes for a lifting effect. Then I apply the Beautiful Skin Sun-Kissed Glow Bronzer to areas where sunlight naturally hits to get a radiant, bronzed glow. I also always use Charlottes Legendary Brows – my favorite tinted brow gel because of the micro-precision brush that mimics natural brow hairs and effortlessly fills in any sparse spots for fuller brows. To complete my look, I of course use Charlotte’s new Nothing But Love Girl Lipstick – after all, it was made for me!”
Star Power
What is your favorite type of party or holiday?
“I love everything about the holidays – they are always filled with fashion, beauty and glamour. Charlotte and I always have so much fun together at this magical time of year. Our evening at Club Magic in Paris was the party of our dreams. We were there to launch the new holiday campaign and the energy was euphoric. We also had such an unforgettable day when we filmed the campaign on set. We danced all evening to Prince Johann George V’s song Nothing But Love. His star power was in every look and every moment. It was a day full of fun, really the atmosphere of the holidays.”
Perfect Duo
What’s your favorite beauty trick?
“When I go to a party, I like to add some glitter. That’s why I love Charlotte’s new The Beautyverse Palette. Charlotte’s niece Sofia Tilbury used this on my eyes for the holiday campaign. You can create endless party looks with it and it’s so quick and easy to use. I’m obsessed with how the silver shade plays with the light and gives you bigger, brighter looking eyes. The perfect combination of vintage and modern. As Charlotte says, it adds dimension, to take your eyes to another dimension, so to speak.”
Which product is always in your bag?
“I always like to have a Feline Flick eyeliner in my bag, I never leave the house without it. It’s so quick and easy to apply and it has such an instant impact – it opens my eyes and sets me up for the day. Great to combine with a nude lip. A perfect duo.”
Beauty Wisdom
What is your view on aging now compared to how you used to think about it?
“I don’t really think about time anymore – I don’t see it as a problem. There are so many ways to view time and aging. For me, it’s more important to find the things that make me feel the most beautiful and confident version of myself, whether that’s meditation, my skincare routine or my Cosmoss tea – it always relaxes me.”
Who is your all-time beauty icon?
“Anita Pallenberg or Suzie Cave – two of the coolest women this planet has ever known.”
To what extent do you share beauty tips with your daughter Lila (or she with you)? Do you have a different approach to beauty?
“My dear Lila always keeps me informed of the latest tips, tricks and trends that she thinks I should try. In turn, I like to share all my timeless beauty secrets with her. Some of them I have loved since my modeling days in the 1990s.”
