The return of retro styles from the nineties and early 2000s is not surprising, given the cyclical nature of fashion. From low-waisted pants to crop tops, we’ve seen it all, and it’s often our beloved celebrities and influencers who lead the revival of certain styles.

Belts were a sartorial addition to women’s clothing culture compared to men’s, starting originally with the same practical purpose. In the Middle Ages, women would hang things like purses and fans from their belts, much like we use bags today. When purses became popular and fashion changed with blouses and long skirts, belts went from a necessity to a fashion accessory.

As fashion designers began to experiment more creatively with belts as a style statement, this accessory evolved into a diverse array of styles and models. One of the outstanding examples was the chunky belt.

Chunky belts were all the rage in the 80s and 90s, and then reached their peak in the 2000s with oversized belt buckles. Now they are making a big comeback. After Kaia Gerber was seen on a night out with a chunky belt, it’s time for you to get your own.
