If you’re looking for a fresh way to inject fullness, movement and fun into a bob, look no further than Hannah Waddingham and her ‘butterfly bob’. This trending update on a mid-length bob is perfect for anyone with naturally fine hair, and is especially flattering on a bob hairstyle in need of a youthful refresh.

The butterfly bob is a modern, softly choppy bob built around light layering that evokes the beautiful, fluid fluttery motion of a butterfly. Not only is it flattering and fashionable, it’s also a ‘brilliant choice’ for mature hair, says celebrity hairstylist Melissa Timperley.

‘The butterfly bob combines the fullness and shape of a classic bob with the airiness of longer, face-framing layers through the crown and around the front, says Melissa, founder of Melissa Salons. ‘The result is a cut that feels lifted and bouncy rather than heavy, with plenty of natural texture and swing.’

Hannah, 51, showed off this trending look to full effect on Saturday Night Live, where her bouncy blonde hair more than matched her energy as she took on hosting duties. The soft layering around her face emphasised her cheekbones, and added a sense of fun and movement that perfectly mirrored Hannah’s natural exuberance.

Although Hannah herself needs no help in this department, the butterfly bob gives what Melissa calls an ‘instant face lifting effect’, unlike more geometric bobs that can be rather unforgiving on anyone with jowls.

‘The soft layers lift the face, soften jawlines and draw attention to the cheekbones, creating a more youthful, fresh appearance,’ says Melissa.

Is the butterfly bob a low-effort look?

Absolutely! ‘It’s easy to maintain, grows out well and works with natural texture, making it ideal for women who want a flattering, modern cut that fits into a busy lifestyle,’ confirms Melissa.

What type of hair suits a butterfly bob?

Who doesn’t love a pretty butterfly? ‘The butterfly bob works particularly well on wavy, curly and naturally textured hair, and it can also suit fine or medium straight hair when cut correctly. For finer hair, the layered structure helps create the illusion of volume. For thicker hair, the cut removes bulk while maintaining shape and bounce. It is especially flattering for hair that tends to fall flat or lose movement.’

How to style a butterfly bob

This is a low effort, high impact style, says Melissa. For straighter hair like Hannah’s, a quick blow-dry using a round brush at the crown will enhance lift, while a few loose bends with a styling wand can add softness. Finish with a light texturising spray to keep the look airy and undone rather than polished. For waves or curls, scrunch in a lightweight curl cream or mousse and allow hair to air-dry or diffuse gently.
