According to a report, ABC has ordered a new series about a team of doctors in Texas. Ellen Pompeo is said to be attached as an executive producer.
“Grey’s Anatomy” is getting a third spin-off. According to Deadline, the US network ABC has commissioned a new series set in the hit medical drama universe. The show will focus on a new team of doctors at a clinic in rural West Texas. The industry website describes them as “the last chance for medical care before miles of desolation.”
Ellen Pompeo and Shonda Rhimes reportedly on board
Several familiar names from the “Grey’s Anatomy” universe are coming together for the project: Shonda Rhimes, who produced the original series as well as the spin-off “Private Practice,” will develop the format together with “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner and executive producer Meg Marinis. According to the report, both will also be responsible for the script and production. Furthermore, the report states that. Ellen Pompeo, known as Dr. Meredith Grey, is involved as an executive producer – as is Betsy Beers. The new drama series is scheduled to premiere in the midseason of 2027, between January and May 2027.
Meg Marinis offered a first glimpse into the project. “I’m excited to further expand the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe,” Deadline quoted her as saying. The series will “bring new characters and stories to life that embody the same warmth, emotion, and connection that audiences have loved about ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ for more than two decades—all set in my home state of Texas.”
Does the series manage entirely without any familiar characters?
This allowed the franchise to continue growing: In addition to the original series, the spin-off “Private Practice” was created in 2007, followed by “Station 19” in 2018. Both are connected to characters from the original series and take place in the same universe, but in different locations: Los Angeles and Seattle. While “Private Practice” ran for six seasons, “Station 19” ran for seven seasons and regularly featured crossover episodes with the original series.
The new spin-off is taking a different approach: For the first time, the series isn’t based on an existing character from the main cast, but introduces a completely new team of doctors. However, according to reports, a possible connection to the familiar team is still hinted at. Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) could potentially be involved in the storyline.
New episodes resumed on May 6th on Disney+.
