Just last year, the world’s largest search engine’s calendar included Black History Month, which is celebrated in February, and Pride Month, which is in June.
The changes made by the company are in line with President Donald Trump’s wishes for change. The calendar changes have been reported by many media outlets in recent days.
The Verge was the first to report on the removal of anniversaries .
Maintenance is not sustainable, Google argues
Google’s communications manager Madison Cushman Veld says in a statement to several media outlets that maintaining the labels is “not sustainable.”
– A few years ago, the calendar team started manually adding larger cultural events in several countries around the world. We received feedback that some other events and countries were missing. Manually maintaining hundreds of events worldwide is not scalable or sustainable.
According to Cushman Veld, Google returned to a model last year where only national holidays and celebrations are displayed in the calendar via the timeanddate.com website.
– At the same time, users can still add important moments to their calendar, the statement says.
Google has also published a blog post about its calendar changes , explaining the background and timing of the changes.
