Few celebrity image evolutions have captured the imagination of hair and beauty obsessives quite like Stone’s.

From a shaved head ahead of filming Bugonia (which she described as “very short and buzzed”), to a whimsical pixie crop to a bottleneck bob – the star appears to subtly shift her look every time she walks the red carpet.

Most recently, Stone has been sporting a choppy, sharp edged bob created by her longtime hairstylist, Mara Roszak. “I trusted her implicitly with the grow-out process,”

Stone explained to Vogue, describing the pair’s years of working together. “We have been through so many lengths and colours of hair, and Mara has been such a consistent and incredible person in my life.” Demonstrating just how versatile short hair can be, Roszak sent Stone to the BAFTAs last night with her bob fashioned into a clever French twist.

British Vogue sat down with the Rōz Hair founder to pick her brain about creating one of the best bobs of 2026.

How to cut a modern bob

In Roszak’s mind, bobs are always in style, but she has a few ground rules. The first one being, “not to have too many layers”. She continues: “If there are layers, I like when they’re very subtle and towards the ends to give it a little bit of choppiness.” Stone’s bob is a perfect example of this. The ends are softly jagged, giving an understated, shaggy effect rather than anything too uniform or curled under.

Roszak also doesn’t like the front of a bob to be longer than the back or a graduated version, where the hair is cut gradually from shorter to longer. In her words, a bob is at its best when it’s “one length and choppy”. This applies to all but the very front sections of hair, which she’ll allow to be subtly layered to frame the face. They can be shorter to “give movement”.

Why texture wins

Creating hair for awards shows and red carpets means any style needs to have enough oomph to give dimension and photograph well, but also be able to hold up for hours on end. Freshly washed hair is usually less than ideal for this, as the clean strands lose the grit that helps them hold a shape.

“I use the ghd Rehab Fine Hair Thickener Spray,” Roszak shares, going on to say that she uses her own Rōz Milk Hair Serum to remove any of the “fluffy, freshly washed frizz”.

Growing out short cuts

Roszak has this advice for people trying to grow out pixie cuts or short bobs: commit to micro trims. “It’s all about creating shape because a haircut can become very round, very quickly. Or, just kind of heavy,” she explains, detailing the things you don’t want when cutting a modern, edgy bob. Micro trims should happen once every four weeks (“at least”), to make sure the growing-out process is happening in the shape you want. Naturally, there’s an element of patience needed, too. “It’s taken Emma a full year to get to where we are, so I’m being patient,” she says. “Be patient with yourself – growing takes time.”
