Dimitris Daskalopoulos, poet, bibliographer, scholar and literary critic, passed away at the age of 87, as announced by the Writers’ Association in an announcement on social media.
Dimitris Daskalopoulos , among others, was one of the most important proponents of the poetry of Cavafy and Seferis and a founding member of the Writers’ Association: “First of all, in his 154 poems (Cavafy) we realize that he uses a total of approximately 3,300 words. It is astonishing that with so few words he manages to write this poetry, and undoubtedly impressive,” he said in an interview with Yannis Pantazopoulos, and LiFO, in December 2023 .
Dimitris Daskalopoulos was born in 1939 in Patras, studied law in Athens and worked at the National Bank, where for a long time he was responsible for the Publications & Historical Archive Department, the publication of the cultural magazine Emeis, while he was also the director of the Bank’s Public Relations Department.
“It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to the founding member of the Writers’ Association, a great poet, literary scholar and bibliographer Dimitris Daskalopoulos,” the Writers’ Association initially stated in its condolence post.
“Dimitris Daskalopoulos was a member with a continuous and long-standing active contribution to the life of our Society. He served as a member of its second Board of Directors (1984-1986) under the Presidency of Emmanuel Kasdaglis and for a number of years, until today, he has recommended the admission of many new members to our Society. In 2025, he awarded the Society’s Grand Dido Sotiriou Prize to our important poet and close friend Tito Patrikios,” he adds.

He had published many books of poetry, literary studies and essays, and had published literary reviews in the daily and magazine press for many years. He had edited editions of Seferis‘ works and had compiled bibliographies for Seferis, G. K. Katsimpalis, Sikelianos, Elytis, Manolis Anagnostakis, Alexandros Kotzias, Nora Anagnostakis, C. P. Cavafy, etc.
He was invited and participated as a speaker in numerous conferences, symposia and workshops. He was a member of the Writers’ Association, the Greek Literary and Historical Archive (ELIA), the Greek Society of General and Comparative Literature, the Study of Modern Hellenism, the Society for Studies of Modern Hellenic Culture and General Education of the Moraitis School.
In 2006, he was declared an honorary doctor of the Department of Philology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in 2010 of the University of Patras and in 2023 of the University of Cyprus.
He served as an alternate member of the Board of Directors of the Greek Language Center, vice-president of the National Book Center and President of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Manolis Anagnostakis Group. He was a member of the Jury of the state literary awards and the Jury of the magazine Diavázo.
In 2015, he was awarded the Petros Haris Foundation Prize of the Academy of Athens for his entire work, in 2021 with the Grand Honorary Prize of the electronic magazine Anagnostis, in 2022 with the Vasilis Michaelides Lifetime Achievement Award of the Cyprus Literature and Criticism Group and the Jean Moreas Prize of the Poetry Bureau, and in 2026 with the Cavafy Special Prize in the context of the Cavafya 2026 events.
